Tibetan Medicine for the Western World

Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine of New York Chiropractic College is hosting an exciting opportunity to explore Tibetan medicine, a Buddhist medical system which, while based on Indic traditions, developed in Tibet from the seventh century on.    From Friday evening, November 6th through Sunday, November 8th the Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine of New York Chiropractic College will be hosting Dr. Barry Clark, Tibetan Physician.  Dr. Clark will be providing a workshop on the fascinating aspects of Tibetan medicine on our campus in Seneca Falls, NY.  This workshop will be appropriate for the general community, as well as healthcare practitioners.

Dr. Barry Clark was born in England and trained in Northern India for eighteen years studying the theoretical and practical aspects of Tibetan medicine, under Dr. Yeshe Donden, who was the personal physician of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for eighteen years.  In his first seven years, of his study, Dr. Clark was also a student of Dr. Pema Dorje. Throughout these years, his theoretical training consisted of teachings on 150 of the 156 chapters of the "Four Tantras" of Tibetan Medicine, as well as a three and a half year teaching on a 460 page work on Materia Medica. He also received several years of clinical training with Dr. Yeshe Donden before beginning his own independent medical practice, 16 years ago.

Dr. Clark’s teaching tours take him all over the world, and we are especially fortunate to have the opportunity to host him in central New York during his 2009 North American tour.  The topic of the weekend workshop will be “Tibetan Medicine for the Western World” and will present the core concepts of Tibetan medicine concerning the body, the disease process, diagnosis and therapy, including:

  • The sources and origins of the Tibetan Medical System.
  • The nature of the healthy body (emotions, subtle energies etc.).
  • The nature of disease (ultimate and temporal causes, energy imbalances, etc.).
  • Ancient diagnostic techniques (pulse, urine & tongue diagnosis and analysis of universal symptoms).
  • A practical, hands-on diagnostic session utilizing the above techniques.
  • The principles of treatment (dietary factors, behavioral factors, medicinal plants, herbs, spices, minerals and gemstones) and their practical application.

Friday evening, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Dr. Clark will be offering an introductory lecture on Tibetan medicine, free of charge.  Saturday and Sunday, the workshop will run from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm.

As the Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is hosting this workshop as a gift to the community, the cost to general public for the entire weekend is $15.00, with lunch included on Sunday.  For licensed acupuncturists, we will have continuing education credits available for the NCCAOM and the State of California.  The cost to practitioners for these 12 credits is $75.00.  As these workshops are generally offered for over $100, we hope that you will take advantage of this exceptionally rare and affordable opportunity.

To register, you can call 1-800-434-3955, extension 132.  Questions can be directed to Jason Wright, Dean of the Finger Lakes School of AOM, at (315) 568-3268/(800) 234-6922, or jwright@nycc.edu.
